Rent or buy

Should a senior rent or buy an exoskeleton in Australia?

Private senior rental is A$129 per week with a four-week minimum. Exo Motion Pro costs A$2,499 to buy. The arithmetic crosses the purchase price at about week 20, but suitability and intended use matter more than a spreadsheet alone.

Exo Motion offers both purchase and rental, so this guide states the commercial difference plainly. The private senior plan is A$129 per week with a four-week minimum, making the initial term A$516. Buying Exo Motion Pro costs A$2,499. A separate tourism plan remains A$129 per day for hotel guests and visitors.

Do not compare the plans as if they are the same service. Senior weekly rental is arranged by enquiry and written agreement, with periodic equipment checks and service-area conditions. Tourism day rental is a short visitor booking handled through the online booking page.

Use the senior weekly plan if

You want four or more weeks of real-world use before deciding, need an interim option while funding is assessed, or prefer a lower initial commitment. The intended user must still be suitable and the written rental conditions must be accepted.

Buy if

You expect ongoing use, want the unit available without renewal and are approaching about 20 weeks of continuous rental. Purchase also avoids continuing rental payments, although suitability should be established first.

What the arithmetic misses

Fit is not guaranteed by specification. Height, weight and stride vary, and how the assist feels differs between people who look identical on paper. Begin with the free Sydney home visit so the intended user can be fitted and guided before deciding.

Terrain matters more than people expect. An assist that feels transformative on the Giant Stairway feels subtle on flat ground. If your use case is mostly level walking, rent before you assume ownership is worth it.

Ownership has small ongoing costs. Batteries are the real consumable — they degrade with charge cycles. Straps and pads wear. None of it is large, but it is not zero.

Weekly rental creates time to observe real routines. Four weeks may reveal more than a short demonstration about comfort, charging, family support and whether the product is actually used. Renting still requires care of the unit and compliance with the written agreement.

Rent, then buy

If you are undecided, begin with the free home visit. If a short guided trial is not enough, ask about the four-week senior rental. After real-world use, decide whether to return the unit, continue under a new written period or buy.

Common questions

Is it cheaper for a senior to rent or buy?

The private senior plan is A$129 per week with a four-week minimum; purchase is A$2,499. Continuous rental reaches A$2,451 at 19 weeks and A$2,580 at 20 weeks, so purchase has the lower cash price from week 20. Fit, support needs and expected use still matter.

What if AT-HM funding is not approved?

A suitable person can still buy privately or enquire about the weekly senior plan. Funding is not required for private rental, but stock, service area, fitting, written terms, security arrangements and periodic checks apply.

Can I try before I buy?

Yes. Start with a free eligible Sydney home visit. If you need more time, the private senior plan provides a four-week initial period for A$516, subject to suitability and written terms.

What does the A$2,499 purchase include?

The device, personal fitting, training, warranty handling and Australian-based support. Purchase includes a 12-month written warranty in addition to applicable Australian Consumer Law rights.

Is tourism rental the same price?

No. Tourism rental is a separate short-stay service at A$129 per day for hotel guests and visitors where available. The senior plan is A$129 per week with a four-week minimum and is arranged by enquiry.

Can weekly rental continue after four weeks?

Continuation can be discussed before the initial term ends. It requires written agreement and remains subject to availability, servicing, security arrangements and return conditions.
