Support at Home and AT-HM

Could AT-HM funding help pay for Exo Motion Pro?

Eligible Support at Home participants may explore assistive technology funding after assessment. Start with a free Exo Motion consultation and Sydney home visit, then use the observations and supplier documents in a careful provider discussion.

The short answer

Funding may be possible, but it starts with an assessed need.

The Assistive Technology and Home Modifications scheme, usually shortened to AT-HM, provides separate funding for eligible people in the Australian Government Support at Home program. It is designed to help participants access assistive technology or home modifications connected to an assessed ageing-related need.

Exo Motion Pro is a lightweight hip-assist wearable robot for selected adults who can already walk independently. It provides powered assistance while the user walks, including on suitable flat routes, slopes and stairs. For an older person, the relevant question is not simply whether a product exists. The question is whether an assessor and provider consider it suitable for the person's goals, ability, environment, risks and approved support plan.

Exo Motion helps with the supplier side of that process. We offer a free consultation and eligible Sydney home visit, explain fitting and operating requirements, provide product specifications and prepare a written quotation. With written consent, we can contact the nominated care manager or Support at Home provider, send the documents, answer supplier questions and follow up. We do not conduct an aged-care needs assessment, prescribe the device, approve funding or guarantee a no-upfront-cost result.

Please read this carefully: neither the category code nor a trial makes Exo Motion Pro automatically eligible. Funding, any participant contribution and the final item are determined through the person's assessment and provider process under the rules in force at the time.

Current funding structure

Understand the tiers before requesting a quote.

Australian Government guidance currently describes three assistive technology funding tiers. They are program limits, not an automatic allowance and not a guarantee that every participant can use the full amount.

Low tier: under A$500

For lower-cost assistive technology needs. Exo Motion Pro's listed purchase price is above this tier.

Medium tier: up to A$2,000

A provider may consider this tier where the assessed item and supporting evidence fit current rules. A participant contribution or other payment may still be required.

High tier: up to A$15,000

For higher-cost assessed needs. Current guidance explains that additional evidence may be required in some circumstances. Approval remains individual.

AT-HM funding is generally expected to be used within a set period, commonly 12 months under current guidance. Participant contribution arrangements differ from prescription and wraparound clinical supports, which are generally fully funded. Your provider should explain the current contribution calculation, available balance and approval steps before you commit to a purchase.

Seven practical steps

From a family question to an informed funding decision.

1

Start with the person's goal

Describe the activity that has become difficult: a local walk, shops, garden, community activity or suitable stairs. A specific goal is more useful than asking generally for an exoskeleton.

2

Check basic product suitability

The intended user must be able to walk independently, follow fitting and operating instructions, be no taller than 190 cm and weigh between 40 kg and 150 kg. Clinical or falls concerns should be discussed with an appropriate professional.

3

Give written consent to coordinate

Nominate your care partner or Support at Home provider and authorise Exo Motion to contact them about the product request. The provider may also require its own authority form.

4

Arrange a free Sydney home visit

Where available, Exo Motion provides a free consultation, personal fitting, short guided trial and training. Record what was attempted, comfort, confidence, supervision and whether the device felt useful for the agreed activity.

5

Complete professional assessment

The assessor considers walking ability, falls risk, cognition, home and community environment, other mobility aids, goals, alternatives and the evidence required by the provider.

6

We coordinate supplier paperwork

With consent, Exo Motion contacts the provider, supplies product details, fitting notes, safety information and a current quote, responds to questions and follows up on progress.

7

Wait for written approval

Do not assume funding is confirmed until the provider supplies its written decision, including the approved item, amount, contribution, ordering method and any follow-up requirements.

Who does what

A clear division of responsibility.

The participant and family

  • Explain meaningful walking goals and current difficulties.
  • Share relevant health, falls and support information with the assessor.
  • Take part in fitting and trial observations.
  • Understand any contribution before approving an order.

The clinician or provider

  • Assess need, safety, alternatives and program eligibility.
  • Decide whether prescription is appropriate.
  • Confirm the funding tier and participant contribution.
  • Approve, order and record supports under program rules.

Exo Motion

  • Explain the product and supported fit range.
  • Arrange eligible Sydney demonstrations or rentals.
  • With consent, liaise directly with the care manager or provider.
  • Prepare and send specifications, fitting notes, safety information and quotation.
  • Respond to supplier questions and follow up on progress.
  • Support delivery, orientation and after-sales enquiries.
You give consent; we handle the supplier-side coordination. You should not need to chase Exo Motion for quotes or product documents. The registered provider remains responsible for assessment, arranging and sourcing the item, portal or government submissions, approval and claiming. You may still need to provide information, attend an assessment or sign required forms.

  • Current walking ability and mobility supports.
  • Where the device would be used and who would be present.

Use our short self-check, then tell us who your care manager or Support at Home provider is. With written consent, we can contact them and coordinate the product-side documents. The self-check is an information tool, not an eligibility decision.

Common questions

AT-HM funding questions, answered carefully.

Does AT-HM automatically pay for Exo Motion Pro?

No. AT-HM is an assessed pathway. A qualified assessor and the participant's Support at Home provider determine whether an item is suitable, eligible and approved, the funding tier, and any participant contribution. Exo Motion cannot approve or guarantee funding.

What AT-HM category may be relevant?

The current AT-HM list includes a prescribed mobility category for assistive products for walking not manipulated by the arms, under ISO code 12 02. This category context does not mean Exo Motion Pro is automatically approved for a person. Individual goals, evidence, suitability and provider approval still matter.

How much AT-HM funding is available?

Current Australian Government guidance describes low-tier funding below A$500, medium-tier funding up to A$2,000 and high-tier funding up to A$15,000, with additional evidence required in some higher-cost circumstances. The approved amount depends on assessed need and current program rules.

Will I need to make a contribution?

A participant contribution may apply to the assistive technology item depending on the person's circumstances and program rules. Prescription and wraparound clinical supports are generally fully funded under current guidance. The provider should confirm the amount before any order.

Should I trial Exo Motion before seeking approval?

A trial can help the person, family and clinician observe fit, comfort, ability to follow instructions and practical usefulness. A trial is not a clinical assessment or a promise of approval, but it can provide useful real-world information for a considered decision.

Who prepares the application?

The participant begins with their Support at Home provider or care partner, and a suitably qualified health professional may assess and prescribe the item. With written consent, Exo Motion can contact the nominated provider, supply specifications, fitting notes, a quotation and supplier information, answer questions and follow up. The provider remains responsible for any application, portal submission and funding decision.

What if AT-HM funding is not approved?

A suitable person may still buy privately or enquire about private senior rental at A$129 per week with a four-week minimum. The initial term is A$516. Stock, service area, fitting, written rental terms, security arrangements and periodic equipment checks apply.

A private alternative

If funding is declined, unavailable or still pending.

A suitable older adult does not have to abandon the product assessment. Exo Motion can discuss private senior rental at A$129 per week with a four-week minimum, making the initial term A$516.

When weekly rental may help

Use it to gather more real-world experience, bridge a funding wait or choose a lower initial commitment before deciding whether to purchase.

Conditions still apply

Availability depends on suitability, stock, service area, fitting, written rental terms, security arrangements and periodic equipment checks. This is separate from the A$129-per-day tourism rental.
